Handicapping
| |
It's very important to handicap your league so you can have the
balance you need between the stronger and the weaker teams. You need to give a
chance for the weaker teams to beat anybody with the handicap on any given
night. I am sure there are a lot of different ways to handicap your league, but
after talking to a lot people and with my experience, I found these two
handicapping systems may best suited to your league. |

|
The BCA handicapping system works this way:
every ball you pocket counts as one point to you and the eight ball is 3 points
so the winner gets 10 points, the loser gets the total amount of balls that has
been pocketed so the range could be from 0-7 points. The handicap will be
calculated as follows: adding the amount of points on a weekly basis and divide
them by the number of weeks you have played. The handicap will be out 30 if you
play 3 games per night or out of 40 if you play 4 games per night, etc.. Now
you have established a handicap for every player in your
league. |

The other handicapping system that I like is the
one that I am currently playing in the Iowa City Pool League. For every game
you win you will receive, 2 points for the 8 ball plus for every ball that you
have left your opponent on the table, so the range could be from 2-9 points.
The loser receives zero points, the handicap will be calculated by taking the
amount points won and divide them by the weeks played. This is much tougher
handicapping system for unbalanced leagues with 3 or 4 strong teams and the
rest are weak. |

All players should be assigned a handicap number in the
beginning of the year and the handicap will change after 2nd or
3rd week of play like 25 if you play 3 games per night or 35 if you
play 4 games, etc... Now I can show an example, in this example I will be using
the BCA system. Let say that we are in the 5th week of play and we
have 5 players on a team and each plays 3 games. Team A has these handicaps 21,
28, 27, 29, 30 for a total of 145 points. Team B has these handicap 19, 21, 23,
16, 25 (New Player) for a total 104. Now you can calculate the handicap by
taking the total points of team A (145) minus total points of team B (104)
which is equal to 41, divide by 3 (# rounds of play) that will give 13 and the
remainder is 2. This how you distribute the points to team B 1st
& 2nd 13 points each round, and for the 3rd round
will receive 15 points, check out the
score sheet for
